How to Play Restricted Formats (MP3, MPEG, Etc.) in Ubuntu

restricted

Proprietary software helps you maximize your Internet experience, but is not open source. The software available includes Multimedia Codecs, Java Runtime Environment, and plug-ins for Firefox.

The Ubuntu Restricted Extras will install Adobe Flash Player, Java Runtime Environment with Firefox plug-ins, a set of Microsoft Fonts (msttcorefonts), multimedia codecs (w32codecs or w64codecs), mp3-compatible encoding (lame), FFMpeg, extra Gstreamer codecs, the package for DVD decoding (libdvdread3), and the unrar archiver.

To install, open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

And that’s it, with that one simple command you can now listen to MP3s, play DVDs, and much more.

Top 10 Linux Games (FPS)

Being an avid Linux user I hear lots of people complain that there are no good games for our operating system, so I have put together a top 10 list of the best FPS games in the spirit of proving them wrong. Most of these wonderful games are even free, so without further delay…

#10 Sauerbraten - Price: Free

sauerbraten1

Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS.

Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.

#9 Nexuiz - Price: Free

nexuiz

Nexuiz is a fast paced 3d deathmatch game project created online by a team of developers called Alientrap. It is available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux (all the same archive).

The first version was released May 31st 2005, released entirely GPL and free over the net, a first for a project of its kind. Since then it has been downloaded over 1.5 million times, and the game is still being updated and developed, currently at version 2.4 and new releases being developed.

#8 Tremulous - Price: Free

tremulous

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more…

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the “Armoury”. The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

What do you think of the list? Is there something I left out or maybe even if you believe I should have listed them in a different order, feel free to leave a comment. I want to know what you Linux gamers out there think of them. :)

New ISP

updatehund1

Well, after my last post, most of you were probably expecting more of the great posts that you receive fairly often, but alas shortly after I submitted my last post, my old ISP went down, this was normal, but after around 3 days I began to wonder. Long story short, I’ve had it with them and their consistent shortcomings and I am now with a new ISP which offers double the speed for around $10 less.

Cheers

…And a Happy New Year

giftsWell, I have now officially returned from the holidays. I had a decent time over the break, and as far as Christmas goes I got a new 8GB Zune (Microsoft…I know…) an Acer 19” Widescreen LCD (Best present ever, by far. My website is beautiful in wide screen ;) ) and a few other small, but useful gifts. I hope everyone else’s Christmas went as well as mine did and I would like to wish everyone a late Happy New Year.

Here’s to hoping that 2009 brings lots of joy,  happiness, and better ATI Linux drivers. :P

Cheers.

Merry Christmas to Everyone

jesus-christ

I want  to take the time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. For me, this year seems as if it is over faster than ever. I’m so thankful for all the good times (and the bad), that the lord has given me this year. I hope everyone remembers to take time and think about the real meaning of Christmas.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

-LUKE 2:8-14

Take care everyone! :)
