Some New Features Include:

We now use GStreamer as our main media playback system, across all platforms - giving us higher performance, better reliability, and a platform for much more media-related functionality in the future.

Improved mashTape
When you listen to music in Songbird you’ll have the option to see Flickr photos, YouTube videos, biographies, google news (and more) for the currently playing artist. mashTape has been completely re-written from the ground up to be more extensible and flexible than ever.

Improved Album Art Support
The album artwork feature now supports drag and drop of images, as well as, toggling between Now Playing and Currently Selected tracks.

Complete Keyboard Shortcuts
We’ve cleaned up our Keyboard Shortcuts this release (and added some new ones for power users). Look for the link to a complete list of Keyboard Shortcuts in the applications Help menu.

Updated Linux Installer
We’ve created a single archive that has all the necessary dependencies so that Linux users can run Songbird without having to install any additional dependencies.

Re-usable Smart Playlists
By popular request we’ve implemented the ability to use a smart playlist as a rule within another smart playlist.

Reveal Original Files
We’ve added the ability to expose the media items in Songbird as files in your filesystem by right clicking and choosing “Show File”.

Recommended Add-ons Updater
A new update mechanism ensures that all upgraded users have an option to install the latest Recommended Add-ons. You can turn this feature on/off in the Preferences.

Hide & Show Display Panes
We were inspired by Atrieu’s Pane Button add-on and decided to add a few buttons to allow you to toggle between showing & hiding Display panes.

Simpler Column Headings
We’ve refined the column heading property list and made it easier to enable the properties you care about. Just right click on any column heading in a library or playlist to give it a try.

Please contact me via email at or in the comment box with any questions, comments, or feedback. Thanks to everyone for all of your interest and support. :)

Thanks for packaging the .deb file.

Suggestion: How bout having a hosting the .deb at launchpad. Then interested folks can install and update through Synaptic.

Have you installed any other versions of Songbird? And if so what was the method you used (I.E., tar.gz, .deb, etc.)?

Please email me with the details and I will try to help you.

  7. 7 pt December 3, 2008 at 9:09 am

Not sure if this is because the build is incorrect but for some reason one of the features is not picking my username and is using “steven”

I am getting this error when I start Songbird from the terminal.

    WARNING: NS_ENSURE_TRUE(mMediaItem) failed: file /home/steven/sbird/trunk/extensions/notifyme/components/sbINotifyMeService/src/sbNotifyMeService.cpp, line 220

Nice one. But the kde 4 menu is not showing song bird icon.

  11. 11 Mad December 3, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Sorry to say, but this .deb doesn’t add an icon to Gnome’s Application menu too. “Songbird” item is there, but with a default icon.

  12. 12 Erich December 3, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Thank you for the input. I found the problem with how it was setting the icon and have corrected it. The download links have been updated with the fixed version that should work properly. Let me know if there are any other problems. :)

  13. 13 Slick December 4, 2008 at 1:14 am

    Thanks for the .deb

Do you have a 64-bit version by any chance? ^^

    Tnx tnx.

Still Crashes under 8.10 32 bit.

Launch the application and crahes. when running from command line get the following output.

    *** glibc detected *** ././songbird-bin: double free or corruption (out): 0xb372a500 ***

  16. 16 Vadi December 4, 2008 at 3:59 pm has it too. A more trustable source, given the history.

  17. 17 Mad December 4, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Thanks for the deb, the icon now works as it should!

Your deb works, unlike the the deb which is currently available at Strange, but this is the first time their deb doesn’t work. Hope they’ll fix it soon, as many people use getdeb and may think that Songbird doesn’t work.

  18. 18 Erich December 4, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Vadi: What do you mean, a “more trustable source”?
I think they both work equally well, and I see no reason for you to come to my site and attempt to put down this .deb I have created, as I have done no such thing to you.

First all thanks, this is great stuff!!! I came across your page while trying to find songbird 1.0 for the x64_86 Hardy I just installed… (getdeb only has 1.0 for intrepid)…

So as soon as update manager finishes with its 200 updates, I’m gonna install this baby

  21. 21 Daniel December 9, 2008 at 9:02 pm

How come that command line arguments like -ProfileManager are not working?

  22. 22 Erich December 9, 2008 at 10:52 pm

To run command line arguments, you can either use a console or a run application prompt and type in

    /usr/share/Songbird/songbird -ProfileManager

  26. 26 Mackenzie December 24, 2008 at 7:05 am

No offense, but how about a source package so we can check it out for ourselves *just* to be sure it hasn’t been tampered with?

  27. 27 Erich December 24, 2008 at 3:58 pm

You could just extract the .deb, then go into the extracted folder and extract the data.tar.gz and take a look for yourself. :)

  28. 28 adam January 10, 2009 at 9:49 pm

I just used your .deb (Hardy, x32) and went in to find the executable (/usr/share/Songbird/songbird yes?) to run Songbird. A tiny window opens titled Songbird but with nothing in it. I have tried to install several ways (always wiping out the previous installation) and keep getting this. What am I doing wrong?

  29. 29 Erich January 17, 2009 at 4:33 am

To be honest I’ve no idea what the problem is there. I’ve never encountered this error myself nor have I heard of it anywhere, perhaps the people in the Songbird help forums can be of more assistance?

  30. 30 PJ January 20, 2009 at 1:49 am

    Thank you for your packaging.

There’s some critical problems here, that I want you to follow up.
I downloaded and installed this file.

Install is OK(dpkg -i xxx.deb), but after I run it, no ‘Songbird’ showed at all.
Here are the messages when I run it from the terminal.

I tried the 32bit one, but it works fine.
Is there any problem for 64bit one?

Thank you for your reply in advance!

  31. 31 Erich January 20, 2009 at 4:14 am

If the 32bit one works, but the 64bit does not, It sounds like you are probably not using the 64bit Linux Kernel.

  32. 32 PJ January 20, 2009 at 8:25 am

    I am using ubutu 8.10 64bit version…

  33. 33 Erich January 20, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I’m not sure what to tell you in this case then. Most people with 64Bit have tried both mine as well as the ones over at getdeb and neither work, so they simply use the 32bit version.
